Fire-breathing wyvern – creature art by Hexar Studios

Creature design services for games

Dragons, alien species, sea monsters and mythical beasts, designed anatomy-first and built production-ready, so they translate cleanly from concept sheet to engine.

  • NDA before any files are shared
  • Engine-tested before delivery
  • Two revision rounds per milestone

A creature design studio built on anatomy and production reality

A great creature feels invented but reads believable. Muscle sits where it should, weight moves through joints that make sense, and the silhouette holds from every camera angle. Players forgive almost anything except a creature that could not survive its own body.

Hexar Studios supports studios from the first creature concepts through final engine-ready delivery. Whether you need a single hero boss, a full bestiary or a set of playable creatures, our designers blend anatomy knowledge with creative direction and scale to your production window without diluting the design.

Have a creature brief on the table?

Send the brief today. You get a written scope, timeline and fixed quote within one business day, under NDA.

Our creature design pipeline

Identity is locked cheaply in 2D first, before any hours go into sculpting.

Concept and anatomy input

We take your brief, references, behavior notes and art bible. Ecology, gameplay role, size relative to the player and combat behavior shape the direction.

Scope and estimate

Complexity, detail level, rig and animation needs are assessed. You get a written scope with timeline and budget before production hours are spent.

Silhouette exploration

Two to three silhouette directions in 2D by default. This is where the creature’s identity gets locked.

High-poly sculpt

The approved concept moves into ZBrush: anatomy, secondary forms and micro detail, with turnarounds at grey, detail and final stages.

Retopology, UVs and texturing

Animation-friendly topology, hand-laid UVs and PBR texturing with attention to skin translucency, scales and material zones.

Final delivery

Exported to your engine spec with LODs baked and rig-ready topology confirmed, delivered via Perforce, Git or file share.

Deliverables and technical specs

Every asset ships with a clear technical spec. Nothing left ambiguous after handoff.

File formats

FBX, OBJ, USD or engine-specific formats on request.

Concept deliverables

Silhouette sheets, orthographic turnarounds, color variations and anatomy breakdowns.

Poly budgets

From lightweight mobile creatures up to 200k+ tris for cinematic hero beasts.

Texture sets

Full PBR plus Subsurface, Translucency and custom scale or feather maps.

Texture resolution

512 px up to 8K per your target platform.

LODs

Up to four LOD levels, baked and named to your convention.

Rig readiness

Deformation-clean topology built for non-humanoid skeletons.

Anatomy documentation

Muscle callouts, skeletal reference sheets and movement notes.

Revisions

Two rounds per milestone, transparent scope beyond that.

Creature design questions, answered

Still weighing it up? A 20-minute call with a lead artist usually answers the rest, and we can review your references together.

Can you handle both 2D creature concepts and 3D creature models?

Yes. We cover the full arc from 2D concepts to 3D models and engine delivery. Some clients need concept only, others bring locked concept art for 3D only. Full-pipeline projects are the most efficient because design intent survives the handoff.

Do you specialize in a particular creature genre?

No, and that is intentional. We design dragons, sea creatures, aliens, mythical beasts, realistic animals and stylized creatures. What stays consistent is anatomy-first thinking: the skills that make a believable horse also make a believable centaur.

What software do you use for creature sculpting?

ZBrush for high-poly sculpting, Maya and Blender for retopology and rigging support, and Substance 3D Painter for texturing. For fur, feathers or cloth we add XGen or Ornatrix. Files are delivered in whatever format your engine team uses.

How long does one creature take?

A stylized mobile creature takes about three to four weeks from concept to delivery, a realistic mid-detail creature six to eight weeks, and a AAA hero boss with facial systems and custom rig needs ten to fourteen weeks. Timelines are confirmed in writing before production.

Can you match the creature style already in our game?

Yes. Share your existing bestiary, art bible or work-in-progress creatures and we match anatomy proportions, silhouette language, texture treatment and level of detail.

Do you rig and animate creatures as well?

Modeling and texturing are our core delivery. Creature rigging is available as an add-on, and our animation team can animate creatures as a separate engagement. Many clients run both in parallel to save time.
